Vertical farming in conjunction with IoT technology as an opportunity for the future
Climate change, population trends, and supply chain shortcomings threaten global food security. The current state of the art in agriculture still faces numerous challenges in terms of sustainability, labor intensity and energy efficiency requirements due to the low level of automation and low scalability of solutions. The international project AGRARSENSE aims to address these with targeted research and development.
The AGRARSENSE project is an initiative of the European Commission (EC) within the Key Digital Technologies Joint Undertaking (KDT-JU) and deals with a rather newer form of agriculture: Vertical Farming. This aims – in line with Industry 4.0 and 5.0 – at a high level of automated and autonomous operations that require advanced sensing and actuation capabilities with new types of process control. Although some commercial solutions are already available, they only partially meet the requirements and do not enable the desired level of autonomy and self-learning capabilities.
This project integrates IoT (Internet of Things) and machine learning technologies to optimize the production of active ingredients in the cultivation of medicinal plants in scalable vertical farming facilities – without chemistry or genetics. The goal is to create a comprehensive solution that addresses the challenges of the current state of the art in vertical farming.

As one of 52 partners from 15 countries in the European Union, we, the Studio for Smart Digital Industries & Services, focus on supporting the vertical farming use case through IoT infrastructure. Our approach is to look at vertical farming units as scalable “boxes”. We collect sensor data and explore the correlation between physical and digital scalability, while also considering synergies with data space issues. Our goal is to provide comprehensive support for vertical farming to ensure the success of this innovative approach to agriculture.
