Austria is in danger of disappearing under more and more concrete and asphalt. The daily consumption of land continues to increase.
How can urban sprawl be counteracted and the quality of location and life preserved? – These questions will be explored at the event “Austria is disappearing II” on 12 October.
In 2016, the event “Austria is disappearing” took place for the first time and examined current challenges and trends of increasing land consumption as well as sustainable settlement development from different angles. The challenges remain five years later: Austria is disappearing more and more under concrete and asphalt. Land consumption in Austria is still too high at 11.5 ha/day and far from the target of 2.5 ha/day by 2030, according to the government programme 2020 – 2024.
Urban sprawl and multiple demands on the limited resource space endanger the location and quality of life in Austria and have numerous negative impacts on mobility, energy, agriculture and climate protection. Our use of land is highly relevant for achieving the goals of the Austrian Sustainability Strategy, climate and soil protection as well as for the preservation of the Alpine habitat.
How can urban sprawl be counteracted and the quality of location and life in Austria be preserved? Do we need new approaches to spatial planning? How can land management be used as an active tool? What influence will the corona pandemic have on our future spatial development? These questions will be explored in the expert conference “Austria Disappears II” with short presentations and a political discussion. During the conference, Austrian and German experts will highlight strategies and tools against land consumption as well as new approaches in spatial planning.
