iSPACE researchers develop commuter route analysis tool for the Salzburg Urban Mobility Laboratory
The GIS experts of the iSPACE Research Studio of the Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft have developed the method of an integrative commuter route analysis for the Urban Mobility Laboratory Salzburg – in short: uml. Based on data sets from Statistik Austria and the City of Salzburg, commuters, residents, daily population and employees were recorded, namely those commuters who travel by bike, train and/or bus. Thus, commuter routes and flows could be visualised in a new way and one can see, for example, exactly how many daily commuters use the individual outward and return journeys to (and from) the city of Salzburg. Most commuters come from the north-east.
What are such analyses useful for? This is explained by iSPACE studio manager Thomas Prinz on the route analysis website:
“The results are primarily intended to enable a transparent comparison of routes and locations in terms of their potential, for example as a basis for prioritizing planning measures. Subsequently, these calculated potentials can be linked with additional data (e.g. on the choice of means of transport in the regions examined) in order to make statements on feasible users”.
Route analysis also used for cycle strategies
The route analysis module from iSPACE was also used to analyze 15 routes for the City of Salzburg’s 2025+ cycling strategy. The researchers are thus also helping to increase the proportion of bicycle traffic in the city of Mozart.
The current issue of the uml newsletter reports on route analysis by iSPACE.
