Innovative digitization and automation solutions for European industry

The road to a digitized industry is still a long one, but a Europe-wide project aims to speed up the transition: Arrowhead Tools

works on innovative digitalization and automation solutions for European industry and aims to close the gaps that hinder IT/OT integration.

Arrowhead Tools is an ECSEL JU-funded joint project of partners from 18 countries, coordinated by Luleå University of Technology. Support from Austria includes the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) through which the RSA FG is also involved in the project.

Industry representatives are also strongly represented in the consortium. The aim is to improve Europe’s competitiveness in the areas of automation and digitalization.

By introducing new technologies in an open-source design and runtime engineering platform, Arrowhead Tools makes efficient IoT and System of Systems development practical. The project will provide engineering processes, an integration platform, tools, and tool chains for the cost-effective development of digitalization, connectivity, and automation system solutions in various application areas. These solutions are expected to enable greater production, energy and transportation efficiency and reduce the industry’s environmental footprint.

The project also plays a role in academia: in mid-November 2021, Silia Maksuti successfully defended her PhD dissertation on “Autonomic Management of System of Systems Security” at Luleå University of Technology. The associated research work was supported by work in the Comp4Drones and Arrowhead Tools projects, among others, in which RSA FG is also involved. The doctoral thesis was supervised by Jerker Delsing, professor at Luleå University of Technology, and by Markus Tauber, scientific manager and project leader of the above-mentioned projects for RSA FG.
