A comprehensive understanding of transport demand is required for the evidence-based design of a climate-friendly mobility system. The data sources currently used are inadequate, particularly in rural areas with a less diverse range of mobility options and in the area of the needs of vulnerable groups of people. By analysing innovative data sources – and linking these with traditional data – SAFARI makes access barriers to sustainable mobility services visible, especially for vulnerable groups in rural areas, and develops appropriate solutions for a more inclusive provision and use of these services.
Using innovative methods of analysis, the potential of data sources that have so far not been used or hardly used in the mobility sector will be investigated using the example region of Burgenland. Despite their heterogeneity, social media and earth observation data in particular can provide information about specific problems and barriers in the transport sector in combination with traditional data. Temperature images, air pollution data, snow cover and pollen counts are also available.
