The Research Studio iSPACE Smart Settlement Systems is working with research and business partners to develop indicators and interactive web tools so that planning strategies can be made more transparent and backed up with figures and maps. This creates a basis for strategy development and action planning to strengthen regional competitiveness and enables sustainable spatial developments to ensure quality of life. Cross-thematic trends and challenges of spatial development, such as climate change or demographic change, are given special consideration.

Due to its connection to the University of Salzburg and other research institutes and companies in this field, the Research Studio iSPACE is an important hub in Salzburg.

iSPACE.forPLANNING

The department iSPACE.forPLANNING works as an international working group on the topics of Smart Settlement Systems. The team develops innovative spatial indicators, location assessment models and planning tools and competent contact for current socially relevant topics. Spatial analyses optimize decision-making processes and are applied in urban and regional planning, mobility planning, spatial research, location and infrastructure planning, and strategic corporate planning.

Research Focus “Smart Settlement Systems”

The integrative research focus “Smart Settlement Systems” combines the latest technologies with requirements from the fields of spatial development, mobility, energy, infrastructure, social affairs and also demography in a cross-system approach. In planning processes, buildings and urban districts are analyzed much more in the context of the respective location profiles and the surrounding infrastructure (networks). The aim is to find comprehensive and integrated solutions that take into account aspects of energy efficiency, environmentally compatible mobility, land consumption and the quality of life of citizens.

iSPACE Smart Energy Balances

for a sustainable economy in a secure, efficient and environmentally conscious energy supply.

The applied research projects of Smart Energy Balances address solutions to spatially motivated questions in the context of regional and supra-regional energy systems. They primarily serve decision-making processes in municipalities, institutions and the energy industry, which face major challenges – such as increasing energy demand, climate protection or geopolitical risks – in the context of their national and international interdependencies.

Mehrgeschossige urbane Wohnsiedlungen in offener Bauweise bergen viele Verbesserungs- und Nachverdichtungspotenziale in sich, welche häufig nicht genutzt werden.

NEWS FROM THE RESEARCH STUDIO

RSA FG experts presented innovative digital tools in Carinthia

Climate-fit is the buzzword that municipalities are using to create new solutions for the design of neighborhoods and settlements and to counter the climate crisis. In Carinthia, part of the iSPACE team provided insights and examples of how this can work.
